Here's a small collection of some of my favorite moments/quotes from this summer with my class of 1st and 2nd graders:
Boy: "Miss Aimee, look!" (points somewhere behind me, I do not look) *giggles* I was going to run away when you looked."
Boy: "Miss Aimee, how old are you?"
Me: "I don't know. How old do you think I am?"
Boy: "76!"
During art one day, the classroom was completely silent, then one little girl barely whispers, "all the single ladies..." All of the sudden the whole class busts out in chorus along with one little boy jumping out of his seat for a dance demonstration. Best. Day. Ever.
Boy: "Look, Miss Aimee, she's dead." (he's holding a ladybug in his hand)
Me: "Aw, how sad. Are you going to bury her?"
Boy: "No, I'm going to keep her as my pet."
Me: "But she's not alive anymore."
Boy: "Oh... I guess I will go bury her in the rocks so she doesn't get squished."
Boy 1: My whale can beat your shark."
Boy 2: "Nah-uh! The whale is bigger then the shark!"
Boy 3: "Yeah, only a dolphin can beat a whale AND a shark. Right, Miss Aimee?"
Me: "What are our rules about painting?"
Boy: "Don't paint your eyeballs!!!"
Boy: "Miss Aimee, that was easy. I already learned that in kindergarten."
Me: "Good! Now you'll be ready to learn more in first grade!"
Boy: "No, I already know everything. I graduated already."
Me: "We're going to make an instrument today called a 'maraca'!"
Girl: "Yay! I always wanted to make a mechete!"
I made color swirled crayons for my class, and as they were checking them out:
Boy: "How did she do this?"
Girl: "I know! They are made of metal!"
Girl 2: "Yeah! That's why they won't break!"
This one is from a card I got from a first grader while I worked in a SAISD class (it was too good to leave out): "Ms. Ferguson, thank you for teaching me. I will miss you. I don't want you to live."
Man, I'm going to miss those kids!

Taking a Leap
Ok, I'm going to do it. I'm going to attempt making my own cleaning solutions. I've been wanting to make the change since shortly after I moved off to college, but have been way too scared/intimidated/clueless/skeptic/etc... However, reading a blog of a friend of mine has given me the courage and resources to take the leap!
I'm super excited and can't wait to make my first purchase of Charlie's Soap!

My Tortilla Experiment
So, I have taken my relationship with flour to a whole new level: I made homemade tortillas.
Flour was EVERYWHERE! All over me, all over the counter, all over the floor, and, somehow, all over Casey. Despite the massive flour mess I had to clean up, I LOVED being so domestic in the kitchen. The tortillas turned out alright, a bit more crispy then I intended. I don't know if a lower heat for longer would work to help make them softer... I'm definitely going to try it again! Flour+salt+warm water= Delisciousness! The tricky part for me was to make the tortillas thin enough without sticking (the dough is super super sticky!)to my cutting board and falling apart. My first few were way to thick for the temperature I was cooking them at- they tasted pretty doughy after they had browned.

While I was at it, I looked at some recipes for homemade tortilla chips- super easy! Cut tortillas into 8ths and put in oven on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for about 8 minutes(they burn quick!) I used my too thick and doughy tortillas to make the chips and it didn't turn out so great. The outside edge was crispy, but the middles were still doughy... I will be trying this again as well!

Evennings In
I love watching my sweet puppy sleep on her bed (That I made from an old dorm comforter and pillow case!)... Isn't she so cute and innocent looking?
